teaching on the brain

I start my internship tomorrow. I can't believe that it's here. I've been waiting for this for so long and of course right now I'm freaking out. I'm completely nervous. I've wanted to do this since I was 5 years old and how I do in this internship decides if I graduate and if I get a job....although not even that is a definite. Last semester 200 interns went through and graduated from my school and close to only 30 got jobs after. It's sad, one major thing I loved about the teaching career and liked was that they always need and are hiring teachers. I always figured I'd be guaranteed a spot. But now...with the economy being so bad and then of course seeing my friends struggle to find teaching positions (and they are GREAT at what they do), I'm just starting to panic some.
I spent most of last night (after a very long and successful church meeting and shopping date with my sister) freaking out. Actual panic attacks. I hate change. And while I am looking forward to this new thing and I'm excited, the fear and dread of failing overcame me last night. Luckily I have some awesome friends, roommate, and sister that were able to pick me up. I also learned who is willing to be there, and who isn't. (A horrible feeling when it's a person you care a lot for and thought felt the same.....) It's funny what one hug, one starbucks latte, one shoulder to cry on, one uplifting text can do. One simple (and maybe silly little thing) but it can go such a long way to someone that needs it.
I know that this is an exciting and new challenge, I just need to (as my mom says) take it one day at a time. That's all I can be expected to do.

Quite a post for a Sunday afternoon I know. I just finally am able to talk about it. And now, the positives (because this is only what I will allow myself to dwell on here on out!):

Apple finds (perfect for an up an coming teacher, right????)

It is scary :( It sucks being graduated and not having a job.. having to wait around for other teachers to take the day off to get work. Sometimes I ask myself WHY did I decide to do this? But honestly.. I wouldn't be happy doing anything else. I'd rather wait a little bit for a job than working some random day job like lots of other people I know.

Once you start you will be a natural at it - don't worry!

Funny thing - I taught high school in a low income area and a student actually brought me an apple one day. I completely made my day...heck, it made my week! That is one of my best memories from teaching - that bringing an apple for a teacher is still a "cool" thing to do. :)

Good luck with your internship - it will be great. Teaching is such a joy...it is hard work, but completely worth it to see kids try their best (and succeed).
